Incised headstone, Kirkmadrine Church

Incised headstone, Kirkmadrine Church

sketchfab

This is an incised headstone from Kirkmadrine Church and on the basis of its inscription, this would appear to be the earliest stone found there. Like the ‘Latinus’ stone at Whithorn, the inscription is laid out in regular horizontal rows and the Roman letters place it within the mainstream of Late Antique Latin epigraphy in the west. The engraving includes a Chi-Rho cross and the lettering mentions two priests Viventius and Mavorius. The engraving on this stone is one of the clearest records of a functioning ecclesiastical hierarchy anywhere in Britain and Ireland in the 6th century.
