The Inklings are the species that players control in Splatoon and Splatoon 2. They are a race of squids that from the age of 14 have the ability to take humanoid form. Unlike their animal ancestor that evolved after the great flood of the planet, the Inklings do not have the ability to survive underwater, and live in urban societies where territorial control by ink is the most popular sport. The Inklings thus use their swimming ability exclusively to dive into ink and swim at high speed. Living harmoniously together with several other species, the Inklings are the most common species in Chromopolis, followed by jellyfish. Due to their constant debauchery and interest in fashion and music, the Inklings have for centuries carried a strong rivalry with the Octarians, whose fighting philosophy is based more on order and discipline.
