This device helps to prevent a household family member or roommate from accidentally locking the interior-access-only deadbolt on an exterior door while you are out. A typical scenario might be if everyone else has already gone to bed, and you decide to go outside for a walk, or to swim laps in the pool. While you are out, someone gets up, notices that the interior deadbolt hasn't been locked yet, and locks it -- then returns to bed. How will you get back in? With this device installed on top of the interior deadbolt (especially if 3D-printed in bright red PLA plastic), there should be no mistaking that a member of the household has stepped outside for some reason, and that this specific locking mechanism should remain unlocked until that person returns. The only way to lock the deadbolt is to remove this device, which requires a conscious, deliberate action. I should note that this will work only for a very specific make and model of interior deadbolt. Look at the photos very carefully to determine whether or not this design will work with the deadbolt on your door before downloading and printing these pieces.
