Needed a safe way to hold an iPhone 4/4S around the neck for my friend who's a mum and lost her previous phone to a saliva based incident, pesky kids. Instructions Tested Stable version 8.01 Untested Beta version 8.05 To Build Download iPhone_Lanyard_8.01.stl Load up in your favorite software and print. (If anyone is UK based and wants one printed for them get in touch) Mines an Up! 3D Printer, and the print on normal settings with normal fill takes about 1hr 45mins & 16g of ABS (Bar the electric @£30.00 p/k total cost ~£0.50p) Buy or UpCycle 3mm or 4mm shock cable and cut to required length (My first attempt was 1.4m, if you cut a length longer than you need it's always adjustable when it's on your neck.) Buy or UpCycle shock cable connector and/or end pieces. NOTE : I bought more components than I needed from RockRun based in the UK. Having looked around it turned out a climbing store had all the elements to finish the job off nicely. Though I ordered enough to make a few for friends, if you are just making one, postage may push the cost up. If anyone knows of reasonable sources for similar internationally drop some information on the comments section and I'll update the content. http://www.rockrun.com/products/Golf-Ball-Cord-End.html 2 x To tidy up the ends of the necklace. @30p each http://www.rockrun.com/products/Eclipse-Cord-Lock.html 1 x A cord lock to adjust the length of the neck. @50p http://www.rockrun.com/products/Shock-Cord-3mm.html @ 90p per m. 2m x Shock cord to create the elastic necklace. It comes in different colors, mine was white with flecks in it. It doesnt really matter for my purposes, it's a bit more function over form right now. http://www.rockrun.com/products/Beal-Accessory-Cord-3mm.html I also ordered up some non elastic cord to do a follow up an evaluate the difference, from my own perspective the shock cord is a bit stiff right now and needs to loosen up to be practical. I'm not on commission or anything with RockRun.com, they were just the best solution I could find so I'm listing these links to help anyone out who wants to make one of these. I've could have used an old rucksack all of the required elements sitting there on it already (See attached picture), if you have one and don't use it anymore don't let it go to waste. Thread the cord through the holes, ensuring you thread through the upper hole on the clip housing. Install cord lock over the two loose ends and loop over each the golf ball ends and tie a knot in the cord. Pull the cord through the hole to make sure the knot is tight. In Use When wearing in transit, remember to clip across the front loop to give your phone extra security. Update 03.01.2012 - Using 8.01 and being unable to print 8.05 I'm a few days into using 8.01 it and I'm not sure it shouldn't be the other way up, it's not great when you want to advance on a track. I think I will be swapping it around until I can try out 8.05 for myself. 8.05 is the result of having used it and got feedback from a few more people. The left to right loop to secure the phone is replaced by a bottom to top (or top to bottom if you wire it up that way.) this seems a more natural movement to lock the phone away securely. It has also made space on the sides for some inverted cord stays, with the intention to test out how these could be used for securing the phone while playing sports, running e.t.c. Alas my printer heated bed packed up two days ago so since I worked on 8.05 none of my prints work, curling all over the place. Until my printer issue is resolved I'm putting the latest design out for everyone else to comment on or print yourselves. Future This will no doubt be an on-going project as I will use it myself as well and any weaknesses will get ironed out. Try and keep the total cost < £5.00 Known Issues I read on the posts on the Thing this is derived from talking about flash interference, this is definitely a problem with the current model, as I get a fix working I'll upload the fix. Any suggestions let me know. Update : 03.01.2013 - I've enlarged the flash hole on 8.05, I have not been able to test to see if this has fixed it yet.
