What does the Iron Cross stand for in the Bundeswehr and society today? On the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the approval of the Iron Cross as a distinctive mark for combat and air vehicles of the German Armed Forces by Federal President Theodor Heuss, experts will discuss the topic on September 28 at the event series "Talks at the Memorial" in the Information Room at the Bundeswehr Memorial. The 2018 guidelines on the Bundeswehr's understanding and cultivation of tradition state: "Tradition needs symbols, signs and ceremonials. They shape the image of the Bundeswehr in state and society. [...] In most cases, they emerged a long time ago. They are representative of the historical and military context that produced them or that is attributed to them." According to the Tradition Decree, the Iron Cross is of particular importance in the cultivation of traditions of the Bundeswehr as a national symbol of recognition and as a symbol of bravery, love of freedom and chivalry.
