someone wanted an islamic door so i had a fast go using HGT2STL included here, instructions: get an image, in gimp adjust levels/curves, change to mode/index to reduce colors, convert back to RGB, splash fill zones of it, do filters/gaussian blur 2pxl and perhaps again at 4pxl if you prefer. save to PNG open in HGT2STL invert BW if you want save to STL open in meshlab 2017 (stabler awesome version) use filters/remesh/quadratic edge, check options 1-5 and 7 and set to .5 simplification or higher save your mesh you can select connected parts in meshlab or explode into different components connected also in the options of select and mesh entity at the right. vector mandalas are fun for hgt conversion. have fun!
