As World War II raged in the Pacific, the Japanese found metal increasingly scarce. They turned to an old technology and began to manufacture hand grenades out of porcelain. These fragile artefacts are not often found the whole. This particular object was scanned at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond and is presented with their permission. See http://rampages.us/wiredworldspast/2015/09/25/porcelian-hand-grenade/ for more details.
