####Japanese Scarf Joint/Splice The Japanese Scarf Joint (JSJ) is a simple and functional joint or splice, which connects two wood beams into a longer one. It is mathematically appealing – a direct application of rotational symmetry of a rectangle (including a square, of course). To make a 3D design, one can just play around or make use of the rotational symmetry, starting from the center of rotation. There are many variations in terms of the connector length and the middle pin (key) shape. According to Sumiyoshi and Matsui, it can be properly called a “Pinned Rabbeted Oblique Scarf Splice.” Among the files are a few Scarf Joints of various thickness and dimensions.
