I got the idea from this print on thingiverse: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2996673 so all credit to SickRanchez for giving me this idea

I decided to try my hand at creating something similar, with my own ideas added on top. Specifically: I made new versions of these rotary discs that actually create the effect. Necessary hardware for assembly: two 3x10mm screws.

print out “BASE” and put “gear no1” in the rightmost slot. Right meaning the side with the rounded edges. This gear is the handcrank gear which powers the whole contraption.

place “gear no2” in the middle slot, the two gears should mesh.

place “gear 3” in the leftmost slot (left being the side without rounded edges), this gear is the first one with an angled gear on top and is responsible for creating the two different rotations necessary for the contra rotating mechanism.

take the “lower axle” and put two of the “gear4,5 print twice” angled gears and two “bottom spacers” on either end.

Put “spacer” onto the “short axle kontra rotating gear” and put both into the large hole at the top of the base, note: the spacer itself does not fit through the hole.

Make sure that the “short axle kontra rotating gear” is in mesh with the angled gear 4,5 and gear 3 below it, so that rotation is transferred.

Insert the “long axle contra rotating gear” into the hole in the short axle contra rotating gear. The long one should stick out the front of the long one.

Take the “top axle” and insert the long end into the long contra rotating gear.

Take “back side” and align it with the parts of the lower axle and top axle which stick out from their respective gears. Push the “back side” over those bits all the way up to the base print. Now all axles should be held securely and all gears should be able to rotate.

Check if at the top of the base both output shafts with keyways are rotating in opposite directions.

screw the “back side” to the base.

fit two of the rotating discs of your choice to the output shafts

note: it is possible to mix two different sets of rotary discs together, but I think the sculpture looks best with only one set used at a time
