Kingdom Death: Monster - Slimline Gear Grid for Small Build Plates

thingiverse

This is a "gear grid" for the hobby game Monster (by Kingdom Death). This grid holds nine "gear" cards in its four cells and sits on a table in front of a player. The game ships with a flat, card stock gear grid on top of which cards are placed: the flat card stock allows cards to shift during play. The idea behind this design is to solve that problem with a slimline 3D grid that can be built on machines with smaller build plates. Post-Printing On my Flashforge Creator Pro, I can build one of these in about an hour and 15 minutes. (If I build without a base, I can shave about 20 minutes off of that, but the hit I take on general stability and "neatness" is pretty severe, given the overall tininess of the design.) As far as assembly goes, there is some post-build assembly required. The grid is printed in three pieces: two "stem" pieces and a trunk. Each "stem" is connected to the "trunk" at the triangular junction pieces. I used some cheap ABS filament to print, and 3M Scotch Super Glue Gel, which works just fine. How I Designed This Complete design and iteration notes can be found on my Kingdom Death blog. I was inspired to make this thing by Fddlstyx's gear grid, though I did not start my design with any components of that thing. I went through three major design variations before settling on my final design. Some images of the design process, which mostly took place using colored pencils and Tinkercad, follow. A build of versions 3b and 3d (left and right, respectively), showing the inversion of structural supports and the addition of more Version 3c, the version that ended up being too wide for my build plate, as a sketch and Tinkercad work-up.
