Kodama, which is named after the tree spirits it so closely resembles, is an array incorporating three Insta360 Air cameras in a very small mount that minimizes parallax and ensures all areas in the 360-degree view are seen by at least two of the component cameras.

Simultaneous capture of three 3008x1504 video streams over USB is a bit challenging for most laptops and even desktop computers. However, the resulting image data allows computing enhanced resolution, high dynamic range (HDR), image data with much finer temporal resolution supporting TDCI (Time Domain Continuous Imaging).

This design is discussed inLessons from design, construction, and use of various multicameras atElectronic Imaging 2018.

Print Settings

Printer Brand:

MakerGear

Printer:

MakerGear M2

Rafts:

No

Supports:

No

Resolution:

0.25mm or finer

Infill:

25%

Notes:

Print in PLA. We used natural PLA to enhance the spirit-like appearance.rnrnAlthough there are minor spans, any sagging will only act as a spring when the two halves are assembled, thus helping to secure the USB cables in place.

Post-Printing

The two halves are held together using two 1/4-20 screws and nuts. The 3D-printed structure encloses and clamps into place the three Insta360 Air cameras and their USB cables.rnrnThe base of Kodama is designed to be directly compatible with the rapid-release clamp of the Sunpak 5400DLX tripod (which costs about $15). Alternatively, Kodam can sit on any flat surface.rnrnBe careful when carrying Kodama: all six lenses are vulnerable. We recommend placing Kodama in a soft-lined pouch for transport.

Acknowledgments

This work was supported in part under NSF Award #1422811,CSR: Small: Computational Support for Time Domain Continuous Imaging.

Category: Camera
