We lost the clip that secures the waffle iron halves together some time ago. It makes it more awkward to store, but more critically it allows the fluffy waffle batter to push open the halves and ooze out, and causes the top of the waffles to not be well-formed and crispy! It also is needed to serve as a handle to open the top when it's hot. Push down slightly when unlatching to make it easier. This is designed to be ergonomic and secure, but you should test the strength of your part before using it on a hot iron! A material that is strong, temperature resistant and slightly flexible is recommended, I favor Poly-Carbonate.
