KX3 Antenna Holster

KX3 Antenna Holster

This is a whip antenna stabilizer and support for the Elecraft KX3 radio. Some KX3 users enjoy using their radio with a highly portable whip antenna (such as the MFJ-1899T). However it is difficult to get the antenna to stay vertical when attached to the KX3 using a right-angle BNC connector. This holster keeps the whip vertical and supports the antenna weight rather than putting strain on the radio's BNC jack. The KX3 has built-in folding legs that allow it to be operated flat on a table or tilted for better visibility. This holster is built in 2 parts to provide support in both positions. Further, the holster locks into the rear knurled knob at the back of the radio to provide antenna stability. This may not be a perfect solution when operating from uneven surfaces, but even in that environment, it will be a better start than doing nothing because the adapter locks into the side of the radio. Not all BNC right-angle adapters are the same... This is designed for adapters with a 10mm square housing. I doubt that it will work for any other size adapter. This holster should work with any BNC antenna. To attach to the radio, follow these steps 1. Attach the right angle adapter to the KX3 BNC jack with the female end pointing straight up. 2. With the holster in its normal orientation slide the holster onto the BNC connector from the bottom; sliding up. BUT... have it off-center about 5mm so that the male end of the BNC connector is sticking out the left of the holster. Another way of saying this is that the holster is ~ 5mm away from the side of the radio. This will allow the upper constraining lip of the holster to slip past the narrow portion of the BNC connector. Practice doing this once or twice before installing on the radio. 3. Slide the holster to the left (toward the radio), engaging the knurled knob into the appropriate alignment hole on the holster. 4. Add the base adapter to the holster if you plan to operate the KX3 with the legs extended. 5. Finally, attach the whip antenna. Don't forget to attach the counterpoise... 6.
