This statue is a copy of a missing bronze statue from the Hellenistic era, probably sculpted around 430 BC by Crésilas. Plaster molds of this statue, of the same size, were found at Baia in the excavations of a Roman studio. The statue of Louvre is the most famous of these copies. She represents the goddess Pallas Athena wearing a helmet and wearing the himation (equivalent to the Roman pallium). It is 3,05 meters high and was discovered in 1797 in the excavations of a Roman villa under a Velletri vineyard. There are traces of red color on the hair, around the eyes and the mouth of the statue, which suggests that it was polychrome. The statue is part of the permanent exhibition of the Louvre in Sully rooms where, since July 2010, she replaced the Melpomène in the big box. The statue that hangs on the other end of the gallery is the Venus de Milo.
