This model represents the Stephane - Réseau André Lachambre gallery in France. The model has been created using SfM-MVS techniques. The pictures were taken in 2016 by a group of expert speleologists, who did a great job taking the picture set we processed later. They brought artificial lighting into the cave as it was pitch-dark. As of today not many caves have been ed scanned using photography as the mean to obtain the data from which construct the 3D model. Caves imply several difficulties to overcome, the first one being the absence of light, which means that usually artificial light must be used in a secluded place with no electricity. A second challenge when scanning caves is that usually they are difficult to access to, so trained and well equipped personnel is required. The last challenge is the intricacy of the structures which means there's a lot of blind spot that must be taken care of in order to avoid as many artifacts as possible. For those not familiar with the process of real structures using these techniques, 3D scanning brings the possibility to obtain lots of information from the models, such as calculating distances, volumes as well as creating different kind of maps, complementing, and in some cases substituting field work. The model is available in both OBJ and GLTF formats.
