Hermaphroditus was the child of Hermes, the Greek messenger god, and Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. Hermaphroditus was both a man and a woman, their name is the base for the term hermaphrodite - a person or animal with sexual characteristics of both genders. There is very little remaining of the original Roman statue. The head, arms and lower legs were added in the 18th century.
