Hello! First I want to say that I don't see the use of the MakerBot just as a means of prototyping. I would like to see them actually produce these pins for a conference in the future. When designers register they could pick their favorite filament color. Firms, Schools, Libraries, and Individuals who own MakerBots could agree to print [x] number of pins. Maybe they get a discount on filament. Upon checking in at the conference your favorite colored pin is waiting for you. Designers who have access to a 3D printer could download my model and add their own textures. This would be a great way for the Design Community to connect. I believe this is in-sync with the theme "Design it, Build it, Fund it"; only with an 'Open Source' twist. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- _________________________________________________________________Main Objectives 1. Showcase the MakerBot's advantages. 2. Address the problem of damaging clothes with a safety pin. 3. Only one part. Speed up printing time and eliminate assembly. 4. No support material. Difficult to remove. 5. Can the pin be more than a pin? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- _____________________________________________Yes, I Have Accomplished Each of These 1. My design features intricate curves and symmetry which would be hard to prototype and manufacture without a 3D printer. 2. Using the 'bobby pin' as my inspiration, my design does not puncture clothes. Instead it uses the natural flex of the MakerBot's filament to clip on to clothes. 3. Instead of integrating the clip feature on the back of some face-plate, I wanted to celebrate the simple mechanism and make it central to the design (Form Follows Function). 4. Since the model is an extrusion, support material is unnecessary. 5. The pin has mirrored symmetry which allows the designer to clip it on to their clothes, and at the same time clip on a name tag or whatever else their creative mind desires.
