After 6 years of good service my Samsung laptop was starting to overheat and to generally fall apart. When I bought it, it had been a high end, shiny aluminium and powerful machine. I was not ready to discard it, but in this state, it also didn't have much use. So I decided to try to give it a new purpose as a desktop pc. What followed was taking everything apart and seeing what can be used. The case was broken on more than one end and the design revolved around creating a new 3D printed case for the mainboard and a mount for the display. Basically all other peripherals had to go. No place for the keyboard, touchpad, sdcard slot, cd/dvd drive, webcam, microphone and one of three usb connectors. After a lot of measurements and a bit of time spent with solid works, I had a design with the basics of a desktop pc. Mainboard, hard drive and display. Put on two heatsinks and an additional fan (with switch), use some M3 and M2 screws to put it all together and plug in your keyboard and mouse and you have a working desktop pc. Took ~25 hours to print, probably more to design and assembly was literally painful, but worth it. This computer has now been running my 3d printer and is a fully working backup pc. https://imgur.com/gallery/A1ZQJ (please disregard the typo in the headline)
