This image was the mascotte of the Laura Eierkolen (eggcoals). They were relationship presents of the mine that were given to coaltraders who sold coal from the Laura and Vereeninging (Mines: Laura, Julia, Eygelshoven). At the back the statue is marked with an L. It was promotion object for the coal traders. The “Laura Popje” (Laura doll) recurs in other promotion materials. At the beginning of 1873 miller Antoon Wackers from Herzogenrath and his brother-in-law Gustaaf Schümmer found a coal layer at a depth of 154 meters in the Bärenbosch near Kerkrade. Three years later they obtained a concession for the exploitation of this field called “Laura”, after the first name of Wackers’ wife. Created by: Nora Chatib
