The Best FIFA is an individual award, which FIFA decided to create in 2016, with the aim of recognizing the best players in the world each season.1 The award is given along with several others such as Best Coach at the body's annual gala known as The Best FIFA Football Awards (in English, The Best FIFA Football Awards).23 The award appears in replacement of the FIFA Ballon d'Or (in French, FIFA Ballon d'Or) which was an individual award, created on July 5, 2010, and was awarded annually to the best soccer player in the world.4 This award was the result of the unification between the Ballon d'Or -given by France Football magazine- and the FIFA World Player of the Year -given by FIFA. In 2010, FIFA and the Amaury publishing group, owner of the sports daily France Football, reached an agreement whereby the FIFA World Player and the FIFA Ballon d'Or trophies became one and the same award, which bore the name FIFA Ballon d'Or between 2010 and 2015, for six editions. With the dissolution of the FIFA Ballon d'Or in 2016, each entity continued on its own to present the award to the world's best in soccer.5 The new FIFA award is determined by the votes of the captains and coaches of all the national teams of each of the FIFA-affiliated federations on the five continents, in addition to those of specialist journalists and fans (unlike the Ballon d'Or, which is the sole preserve of specialist journalists). Each captain and coach votes for three players, awarding five points to the first-placed player, three to the second-placed player and one to the third-placed player, with the sole condition that they may not vote for a player from the same national team. Voting takes into account the merits acquired by the players in their careers with both their clubs and their national teams.6 After all the votes have been counted, FIFA invites the top three men's and three women's players to a gala event in Zurich, Switzerland, at the beginning of the season. At this gala, the final voting order is revealed and the awards are presented.
