• All Minis except the period when Hydrolastic suspension was fitted (from ca. 1964 to 1972) had rubber cones as springing medium. Rubber springs get hardened with time and use and have a progressive compression rate, so some designers thought about a steel spring but space in Mini subframes is sparse and therefore the steel helical springs need to be very short, in this case only three windings. Helical steel springs have a linear compression, that either support better ride or can be modified to sportier vehicle dynamics with appropriate choice of spring material/diameter.
