Lightning Detector Enclosure

Lightning Detector Enclosure

thingiverse

This is a lightning detector enclosure. The lightning detector is based on the AS3935 lightning sensor from embeddedadventures.com. All the other components are modules from eBay. The neopixel arc shows the lightning distance from blue sky to red overhead The 4 indicators show the SD card status, the GPS status, and lightning sensor noise and disturbance alerts. The initial design had the lightning sensor inside the main enclosure, but the neopixels caused interference which rendered the lightning sensor deaf to lightning. The save was to move the lightning sensor to the pod sticking out the back. This fix requires some manual rework (drilling, etc) because I was too lazy to rework the original design. Printed with eSun Silver PLA, which has a nice color and good structural integrity but printed lousy. The eSun Black PLA parts turned out great. Taulman t-glase was used for the clear parts. The complete electrical schematic and Arduino code are included with this post, so you could build this since it's all parts that can be ordered online. However I would rate it as a difficult build. Notes: A high quality 5V 1A power supply is required because cheap switching power supplies interfere with the lightning sensor. Locate the device somewhere free of electrical noise (the indicator lights will glow red if there's too much interference). Power off when inserting the SD card.
