The Lockheed SR-71 was a strategic reconnaissance aircraft operated by the United States Air Force (USAF). It was built by Lockheed Corporation in its Advanced Design Development division (also known as Skunk Works), and was designed by aerospace engineer Clarence L. “Kelly” Johnson. The SR-71 was the latest variation of a set of planes that became known as Blackbirds (A-12, YF-12, M-21 and SR-71). Unlike its predecessors, the SR-71 was larger, carried more fuel and had two cockpits, the front for the pilot and the rear for the reconnaissance systems officer. None of the 31 SR-71s manufactured have been shot down to date, but 12 units have been lost in accidents.
