The 9A-91 is a small-sized machine gun designed at the Tula Instrument-Making Design Bureau in 1992 as a more technologically advanced analogue (and competitor) of the SR-3 Whirlwind machine gun. In 1994, production began, and in 1995, the machine was modernized. The PAB-9 armor-piercing cartridge was developed specifically for the 9A-91, a cheaper analogue of the SP-6, which ensures the defeat of forces in personal protective equipment of the 3rd class and at a distance of up to 100, guaranteed to pierce an 8-mm steel sheet.
