These hinges are damped using a Magnetic stator built into the bulkhead hinge block, and a magnetic rotor-which is built into the hinge pin of the assembly. These magnetic arrays are constructed from Neodymium magnets which are radially magnetised. Therefore- the magetic field strength is stongest at the outer edge of the magnets.The outer stator is magnetised North/South and the rotor array is magntised South/North, as the rotor turns the stator array opposes the turning motion of the hinge pin therefore - opposing motion of the doorsmovement. This damping of the doors movement will allow normal operation of the door without excess restriction, and the damping will be sufficient to stop the door slaming against the bulkhead. Under normal conditions the door will return to a closed position due to the magneticforce opposing the doors opening. All metal hinge parts to beconstructed of 316 L Stainless Steel, and t he magnetic arrays are constructed of nickle plated neodymium magnets which are also be encapsulated in plastic or epoxy to eliminate the - risk of corrosion. As the door hinge and the hinge pin are the only moving parts and the non corrosive materials used, will mean that the hinge will be relitively maintenance free.
