A lychgate, a roofed gate found at English churchyard entrances, serves as both a memorial and part of the burial site due to its historical purpose. The term "lych" originates from Old English, meaning "corpse." In medieval times, corpses were placed on biers and carried to lychgates, where funeral services could be held before proceeding to the church. Afterward, pall-bearers might rest at the lychgate before continuing down the lych way to the burial site. Folklore surrounding these structures includes tales of screech owls as harbingers of death and small carvings meant to confuse or trap the devil. Today, lychgates provide a beautiful backdrop for romantic images.
