These are alternative MAGHEX BASES that use 5MM MAGNETIC BALL (Buckyballs) for the edges.

All posted bases have been tested and work very well.

Shout out to Xevin who is single-handedly responsible for me owning a 3D printer.

Print Settings

Rafts: No

Supports: No

Resolution: 0.25

Infill: 10%

3 Wall Line Count

3 Bottom Layers

3 Top Layers

Filament: Generic PLA Black

Why did I make these?

The original 3x3mm cylindrical magnets I ordered are pretty weak, I only ordered a 1000 and they took ages to arrive.

I found my old 5mm magnetic balls. I have well over a thousand and can easily get more if needed.

The balls rotate so polarity is never an issue.

I still use the 3x3mm magnets for the center magnet so EVEN MORE MAGNETS!!!

I wanted the bases to be a bit more chunky. Now they are a lot more chunky!

Should you make these?

PROS

No polarity issues. Clip the magnets in, make sure they rotate freely and you are done.
The bonds between the bases are very strong.

They stack amazingly well which makes storage very simple. With or without inserted tiles.

Linked bases (to cut down the number of magnets) work without polarity issues.
Chunky!

CONS

Chunky bases mean more material.

Chunky bases mean longer printing time.

Notes

It seems that to the magnet manufacturers 5mm is more of a vague suggestion than an actual spec.

I found magnets both below and above 5mm in varying degrees in my bunch. All work ok but some of the bigger ones stick and require a bit of convincing to spin.

I wanted center magnets everywhere so that I could add magnets to furniture, traps etc. That is why the linked bases also have center magnets.

I added a base with a 5mm center magnet. This does not seem to be any stronger than the 3x3mm cylindrical ones.

Changelog

25 June 2020

Add half and third bases that use 3x3mm cylindrical magnets. They spin so still no polarity issues.

24 June 2020

Added spacers for pits, water or lava in two sizes (4mm and 6mm) to accommodate different tile heights. Thanks for the suggestion (Southie527)

31 May 2020

Added a hole to the 1/3 base to make it easy to pop the 1/3 tiles out.
