The Maitland was a 3-masted wooden schooner that sank in 1871 after a collision with not just one but 2 other ships! It was dark and the Maitland was carrying corn from Chicago when another ship called the Golden Harvest was seen head on. The Maitland turned her rudder hard to port (which you can see in the model) to avoid the ship but they grazed each other sending their rigging down. Right behind the Golden Harvest was another ship called Mears and it slammed right into Maitland sending her to the bottom of Lake Michigan in minutes. The V shape from the collision can still be seen today. Maitland sits upright in the Straits of Mackinac Shipwreck Preserve in 85 feet of water. The Maitland has been underwater, preserved in the cold, freshwater for 149 years!
