I designed this thing to help me use 3rd party filament on the Makerbot 5th Gen. Since the spools they use are propitiatory to the machine, using 3rd party PLA is rather tough. The easiest way is to re-spool the Makerbot spool with new filament. I design a spin handle that clips right into one of the opening on the side of the spool. You will need a tapered wood screw to bolt the inner Handle and the clip together.Some assembly is required :)
