Miter inserts were all chewed up, so I designed new ones as close as I could to the original. Should be easily modifiable if you want to try 0 clearance insert. To connect the two pieces, I had played with the idea of a puzzlepiece-like connector, but any weight in the middle would cause it to buckle.
