Ancient Idalion's Power Play, Unveiled: A Statue of Great Wealth and Status This imposing figure wears a stunning wreath, indicating his status as a devout worshipper. The statue is quintessentially Cypriot, blending Green and Persian influences with the local tradition of carving limestone votive images. This magnificent piece was dedicated at a prominent sanctuary in the city of Idalion (modern-day Dali), where the local god was later associated with Greek Apollo and Phoenician Reshef. The colossal size and exceptional quality of the carving reveal that this man held significant wealth and social standing. He likely belonged to the ruling dynasty, possibly even the king himself. As a chief worshipper in his realm, he may have also served as high priest. The sanctuary was a major cult site within the Greek-speaking kingdom of Idalion. After Idalion's conquest by Phoenician neighbor Kition (modern-day Karnaka) around 450 BC, its new rulers respected the grand shrine and made offerings there, including this statue.
