This is a so-called marble "Marble" bust sculpture, one of the first significant works of the sculptor.  Zaļkalns came to Paris, where he attended Rodin's study and turned to sculpture. The training lasted only a few months here, contacts with Roden were rare but left a significant impression on Zalkalni at the beginning of his activities. Those works including this sculpture were quite aggressive, rugged and at the same time fusion-like modelling.
