Marcus Favonius Facilis was a Centurion of the XX Legion of the Roman Army. This memorial stone was found to the southwest of Colchester in 1868. The stone would certain pre-date the Boudican revolt of AD60-61, and it is generally thought to date from AD43-49 when Legion XX were based at Colchester. Recent petrological and geochemical analysis has shown that the stone used came from quarries at Norroy-lès-Pont-à-Mousson in Eastern France. The actual memorial stone is in Colchester Museum - What I have photographed here is a cast which is in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. In some areas the mold lines are clearly visible. Photographed: 10 July 2015
