This is my quick proposal for "Mars Challenge". ..We want to explore space, find a "new home".. My goals here were to emphasize the integration of the small "Mars community" with its surroundings - new spaces they came to live in. Apart from some obvious barriers that are needed to keep man alive on Mars, there is no special need to build forms separating newcomers from the wild and beautiful landscape. Some very basic and timeless rules were used to help initiate the "place" of human activity. ..So we have old roman rule of "Cardo" and "Decumanus" crossing fulfilled here to define a point in space that everyone and everything will relate to. ..The units that form the first bunch will then be surrounded by new layers of units. The main construction structure will be extremely basic from technological point of view (replicable/printable) but the "inlay" will evolve graudually letting for the standard of living rise. For example: as glass shields will get available locally, the outermost units, will get real windows ( they are planned to be used as appartments and greenhouses till new layer of units will cover them ). As the settlement gets big enough the older, core sectors may be functionally redefined to hold some community activities ("agora" type spaces) This structure is a self sustainable, safely isolated shelter on one hand, and the open, dynamic "place" naming the new world directions and letting people explore it and fall in love with it. Thank you.
