Mazda5 Dashboard Magnetic Phone mount

thingiverse

A magnetic phone mount for the driver's dashboard of a Mazda5 (2008), directly above the steering wheel. Add a strong magnet into the mount, and a flat piece of metal into your phone case. Instructions Was designed specifically for a 2008 Mazda5. Other models or model years may be compatible, but you'll need to test them. Print in ABS, not PLA, to avoid melting in a hot car. Wedge the left and right brackets into the slots on the side of the plate. They were designed to have some play, so that they can be adjusted as necessary to lay flat against the curved dash. The brackets clip to the front of the dash, catch in a seam across the top just behind the front, and are held by tension. You may find that gently filing the tooth on the underside of the bracket to a sharper point, will help it to grab the seam better. Slip an 18mm x 3mm strong magnet like this one into the plate, and a thin, flat piece of metal for it to stick to, into the back of your phone case. Tips for modifying: If you need to change the clip's distance between the hook and the tooth, the best tension is achieved when the length is short enough so that the hook is actually pulled away from the underside of the dash a little. Don't move the vertical posts too far forward, or the weight of the phone will apply leverage toward the driver, popping the tooth out of the seam.
