Mechanical Cryptex
thingiverse
Here is a mechanical cryptex design that I've created, inspired by the ingenious mechanism from The DaVinci Code. Unlike a typical bike lock, this innovative device utilizes gears for each letter wheel, necessitating one end cap and 4-5 letter rings per set, along with one less support ring than the letter rings and a gear to match each letter ring. As depicted in the image, assembly is straightforward; simply use dowels to connect all the components together. There should be enough holes for gluing dowels, as well as loose dowels featuring gears and attached only by one end. I've left out the locking mechanism, but it's easily completed by adding tabs to the dowel ends and cutting corresponding holes in the end caps. If anyone decides to print this design, I'd love to see how it turns out, as my initial attempt was marred by a rough finish due to printer limitations.
