Chess pieces designed for Tinkercad and Makerbot Contest. This part was made with Tinkercad. Edit the part online at: https://tinkercad.com/things/0x3mhuqwPJM Deconstructed part is also available from Tinkercad at: https://tinkercad.com/things/0F11oYDPGeBhttps://tinkercad.com/things/a0ndh2PKqUYhttps://tinkercad.com/things/gLBFeOQYqVe Instructions This is my first attempt at making any kind of part for 3D printing. I have been reading about 3D printing for awhile now and when the contest came to create something using Tinkercad I was really excited. At first I started out with a simple design because I did not think Tinkercad with the primitive shapes would be able to create complex shapes, but I quickly learned that was wrong. I am actually really impressed with the amount of capability Tinkercad provides with a simple and intuitive interface. I have used other professional CAD packages for work but found the Tinkercad experience to be much more fun. The idea is that the chess pieces consist of three main parts, base, body, and head. The design features two colors to take advantage of the Makerbot Replicators dual extruders. Not being certain as to how to define a 2 color printed part I have left the two colors together but have designed them such that they do not overlap. The deconstructed file, http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:20498, has the parts layed out so they are printable (I hope). Once printed the parts should stack together with the indexing holes and maybe a little bit of glue. I have uploaded the two stl files for the white and green components as I think this what is required for the two color print. For some reason the Queens white base is not being exported from Tinkercad despite it being rendered, something I will need to take a look at. I also thought it might be fun to make an alternate King and Queen Base in support of the sponsors for the contest. I have created the complete chess set on Tinkercad but also uploaded only the alternate bases to this main posting. https://tinkercad.com/things/ggwbyO6GABq Hopefully you enjoy this chess set as much as I had designing it. Since this is my first time designing (and not owning a 3D printer) I hope that others with printers will be able to try it out and let me know any changes that should be made to get a successful print.
