Discovered in 1958, the hormone melatonin (Formula: C13H16N2O2; CAS: 73-31-4) regulates sleepâwake cycles. It is often used for trouble sleeping as a result of jet lag or shift work, however benefits are unclear. Side effects are minimal and include include sleepiness, headaches, nausea, diarrhea, and affected dreams. Melatonin is involved in circadian rhythms including sleepâwake timing, blood pressure regulation, and seasonal reproduction. Melatonin is also present in various foods. This molecule is provided in three standard representations and includes a simulated electrostatic (van der Waals) surface.
