The Mayerthorpe Meteorite was discovered in 1964 by M. Dmitroca while cultivating a field near Mayerthorpe, Alberta. This is a cast in the collection at RAM made over 30 years ago from the original 8.7 kg mass which is held in the University of Alberta Meteorite Collection. This meteorite shows distinct “thumbprint impressions”, a texture known as regmaglypts formed as the surface of the meteorite is ablated as it enters Earth’s atmosphere. This cast, along with others in the Geology Collection at RAM are high-quality reproductions that show signs of deterioration, not unexpected for the materials used. Photogrammetry captures the present state of objects in the collection that may deteriorate over time and also creates new opportunities to interpret objects not represented in the collections at RAM.
