This is a remix of the [original Micro-Sketch](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1668472) by [Ferjerez](https://www.thingiverse.com/Ferjerez) and the [remix](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2696231) by [PowerScissor](https://www.thingiverse.com/PowerScissor). The recognition should go to these fine people as I've only taken what they've created and re-purposed it to my needs. What is it? ==================== A remix of the popular and awesome Micro Sketch by Ferjerez. Micro Sketch is a 2d pen plotter, similar to an Etch-a-Sketch. My version uses a paper carriage tray sized to fit 3x3" post-it notes, a friction-fit pen holder, as well as some tweaks to functionality and tolerances. Why I remixed it ==================== I helped lead an engineering camp for kids and wanted to teach them about rack and pinion gears. Because it was part of a larger activity and without constant adult support, I wanted the micro-sketch to be easy for the kiddos to change both the paper and pens. I also had to work around the bed-size limitations of my machine. Note: I'm leaving this as a work-in-progress as there may be additional changes depending on feedback. If something doesn't work for you, please let me know! PS: the photos were taken after the kids had their way with it which is why there's marker splotches everywhere. Additional supplies ==================== * [3x3" Post-it notes](https://www.post-it.com/3M/en_CA/post-it-ca/all-products/products/~/Post-it-Notes-canary-yellow-3-in-x-3-in-7-6-cm-x-7-6-cm-75-sheets-per-pad-8-pads-per-pack/?N=4327+8709316+8709381+8710660+8710848+8711017+8711713+8719859+3293593487&preselect=3293786499+3294529206&rt=rud) - It doesn't have to be this brand, any 3x3 post-it note would work. The adhesive helps keep the paper in place. * [Crayola Fine markers](https://shop.crayola.com/color-and-draw/ultra-clean-washable-fine-line-markers-bold-colors-8-ct.-5878367010.html) - the pen holder is designed for these exact markers. The marker is press-fit into the holder to the correct height. Other markers might work, but I haven't tested them. * M3x6 screws - optional. On the off-chance your markers are smaller than the ones listed above, or the tolerances make the marker too loose, the pen holder accepts tightening screws. Printing Notes ==================== * All parts printed at .2 layer height using 1.75mm PLA * No brim or support. Brim may cause the teeth to not fit correctly. * Tray has 1 layer height "ears" to combat warping. Use a craft knife to cut them off. * Print one of each part except print two of gear_with_pins. * If you find the knobs are too loose, you might consider using the original source files. Tolerance of .2 was used. * Rotate the pen holder 45º to fit on your bed if necessary. Use M3 screws if marker is too loose. * Colours: Hatchbox Orange, Hatchbox Yellow, and AMZ3D Light Blue * Printer: Monoprice Select Mini v2 Changelog ==================== Design 1. Tray: resized to accept 3x3" Post-it notes. Added a small rack extension so that the tray didn't slip off the gears when moved to the far right. 2. Pen holder: designed specifically for fine-tip Crayola markers. The marker is pressure fit to the correct height. I added holes for M3 screws in case the marker was too loose though I didn't wind up using them. 3. Base: extended to provide support to the tray. Without it, the tray dips and comes out of contact with the marker. The base is not as long as I wanted it to be, so yes, it's short. This was a bed limitation of my printer. 4. Tolerances: I adjusted the press-fit hole tolerances to .2 as the original was too tight for my machine. If you find that my tolerances are too loose, you may consider printing the original knobs and/or using a bit of CA glue. 5. Misc: Strengthened X-axis cover and adjusted one corner to clear the Y-axis plinth. Increased Y-axis channel width for smoother operation. Added additional material around Y-axis plinth holes for better fit/strength. Adjusted length of Y-axis cover to better match plinth. Thingiverse * 06-01-2019 – text edits (no design change)
