Burnt mound at Mid Clyth (Caithness), Highland, Scotland. A previously unrecorded burnt mound next to a stream. Livestock erosion has revealed internal structures within the burnt mound consisting of walling and upright slabs. The mound is at present 8 metres diameter. Burnt Mounds are generally dated to mid-late Bronze Age, they are a type of archaeological monument that are defined as a mound of burnt stone associated with a watertight trough or pit and a hearth. Excavated examples have shown that they can be quite complex structures. There are many theories, but little solid evidence as to their use - cooking, sauna, tanning textile processing, brewing.. maybe all of these.
