Well, I managed to damage my original carriage handwheel so was forced to get a replacement sorted out. This is the result. The lathe is a chinese 7x14 as supplied by amadeal(UK), but similar lathes are supplied under many different names and by many different companies. The diameter is 80mm, same as the original. It fits an 8mm shaft. The original handwheel had a metal insert, which was locked onto the indented shaft with a grub screw. This replacement is a tight fit onto the shaft, which is a good thing, and at present I have used a 4mm cap screw to secure onto the shaft, this had the advantage of using the full length of the threaded hole for strength, and in conjunction with the friction between shaft and handwheel, provides a solid feel. The locking hole is not supplied with any thread, just a hole that will require tapping to your chosen size. The handle was re-used from the original handwheel. This hole also required tapping and the thread on mine was found to be 6mm coarse. At present it works well, and has been in use for a couple of weeks now, a future project will perhaps be to purchase or make a metal handwheel, but that won't be for a while yet...hopefully. Just mind and use sufficient wall thickness tor the necessary threads. Think I used 3mm wall thickness, 20% infill. The Sketch-up file is included in case there is any tweaking required to fit your application.
