Back during the 2016-2017 NHL Stanley Cup playoffs, Molson Canadian had a promotional giveaway where you could collect a set of 7 miniature Stanley Cup replicas. These 7 replicas depict the evolution of the Cup and it's base through the first 125 years of its existence. My team had a good playoff run and needless to say I had opportunity to celebrate and collect a couple sets of these mini Cups.

During the promotion, I noticed several bars had really nice display cases for the sets, but they weren't commercially available. In 2017, I decided to design my own display case and wanted to improve upon the ones I saw back then. This design was the result of that desire ( the result of which has be languishing in my archives since)

Happy printing! If you make it please post pictures, I'd love to see it!

Print instructions

Category: Decor How I Designed This

For this design, I created a series of display alcoves to house the miniature Cups. Each alcove locates it's Cup centered vertically and aligns the central axis of each trophy with the axis of the alcoves' cylindrical feature. The walls of each alcove feature a series of small holes arranged in columns and rows and at pointed towards the axis of the cylindrical wall. These holes are intended to allow LED back-lighting within the sealed case to be transmitted through to shine on the miniature Cups like miniature spotlights.

To aid in the design of these alcoves I had also modeled up stand-in versions of each cup in the collection. These stand-ins were used to digitally test fit the alcove models and as such the OD of the base and the height of each piece is as measured in my collection. Most of the rest of the features are approximated to actual dimensions, but accuracy on these features was non-critical and only included to approximate the visual look of each piece.

Additionally, a 125 year commemorative Canadian quarter was produced the same year. An alcove has been designed for this coin to match the alcoves for the trophies.

The display case itself is a work in progress. I intend to make the frame from wood and source a piece of Plexiglas for the transparent front. Ideally glass could be sourced. The alcoves will be glued to the bank of a piece of matting board with holes cut in to allow viewing of the Cups. LEDs would be placed behind and between the alcoves and the back of the car would be sealed with another piece of board. LED strips would either be battery powered or powered from an adapter. An approximate size of the matte board in my model is 770mm x 660mm.

My grand design plan is to laser cut the title piece and engrave identification and description plaques for each cup. I based the text I intend to use on each plaque on photos I took of the Molson-produced display case, as such I will not be uploading the text here. The history of the variations of the Cup is documented online so it should be relatively easy to concoct your own :)

If you have a set of these Miniature Stanley Cups and would like to use my alcove design for displaying them, I wholeheartedly encourage you to do so. A simpler case design than the big one I have rendered is definitely feasible (and honestly recommended as this case design is a bit grandiose).

Happy printing! If you make it please post pictures, I'd love to see it!
