A radial engine is an internal combustion engine where the cylinders are arranged like spokes on a wheel, around a central crankshaft. This unique arrangement allows for a compact design and cooler operating temperatures compared to inline or V-configurations. Radial engines were commonly used in aircraft during the 1930s and 1940s before being largely replaced by jet engines. Despite their obsolescence, some radial engines continue to be used today in specialized applications such as vintage airplanes and boats.
