With no protection of the x-axis motor cable: When the stepper wires break it will always be at a place where you cannot solder a new cable to it......Exactly where the cable goes into the motor. With this solution, when a/the wire(s) should break, it will be at a place where you can always solder a new cable to the broken wire. Also, the x-axis motor cable makes a nice loop so the forces are nicely distributed over more of the cable.
