This mobile phone amplifier includes unique features to store IPhone Xs accessories while it simultaneously projects the phone’s sound further away. Basically, it is a box made of rigid material (Delrin 2700) that directs the vibrating sound waves towards a hole while dissipating their energy as they go further away from the phone, you can call it a modern hollow box.The idea to create a mobile phone amplifier came from the memory of the typical high school project where, as kids, we were asked to attach two plastic cups to the extremes of a cardboard tube with a hole that could fit a mobile phone playing a song. The first idea was a solid block with two conical holes, but it didn’t really do much for the sound propagation. Then, we reduced its size and used the silhouette to create a shell from the original design, but still, there was a lot of space left unused. Finally, we went back to the original shape and adapted it so that instead of having conical holes it was a hollow box that could also store your Airpods, regular headphones and phone charger. In the end, users can play their favorite song and charge either their IPhone Xs or Airpods without having to worry about misplacing nor losing any valuable phone accessory. The significance of this project is that we were able to turn a simple high school project into a useful and innovative product. Nowadays kids with access to additive manufacturing technologies can have a better understanding of all the physic laws they are taught, not only from the books, but from real life applications like this sound amplifier. Designing a functional prototype required, at least, basic understanding of how soundwaves work and the capability to see how that idea can be used in people’s daily lives. All this thinking can now easily be used in education to propose innovative challenges to students of younger ages, while also motivating them and exposing them to the concepts of the STEM field.The design of this part follows the minimalistic trend by letting the user focus in its real purpose, the sound of good music. Visually, it looks like a simple box, but when you’re really paying attention, you can discover that it hides an immense variety of usages inside it. The impact of 3D printing technology in our design is that it made it possible for us to create a complex structure with a lot of features in a single production step. It turned what used to be two plastic cups with a cardboard tube into an actual product that is really useful for Iphone users.
