This basically came out of a need to hold up my mobile phone while at the kitchen table.

I wanted it to be foldable so that it could be carried in the pocket, hence also why it is not the full width of a standard phone. Edges are as rounded as possible for the same reason.

The holder is designed to take a phone which has a cover on it, so it caters for more than your basic “naked” phone thickness. My phone has a cover that closes like the cover of a a book to cover the screen. Obviously the phone needs to be put in the stand with the "book cover" part open. It is then tight enough to keep the phone from falling sideways, whilst still not covering any part of the screen. It is quite stable in use and easily foldable and pocketable.

Standard note for legal purposes: Use at your own risk.

Print Settings

Printer:

Snapmaker2 A350 or any 3d printer

Resolution:

Normal

Infill:

15%

Filament:

Hobbyking Premium PLA

Light Green

Notes:

I used standard PLA and printed the 4 components separately.

The top part and the lower part can be printed without supports, as long as they are laid on their back (hinge side up).

The biggest challenge is the middle piece as it has a hinge on either side. I found that the best way to print this is sideways, using a raft for stability. In CURA I used the "concentric" support and this came off very easily once it was completed.

Finally there is the hinge. Two will be needed. A simple brim will suffice. No support needed. To get a better fit, after printing I sanded the hinges just enough to make them go through the hinge holes without too much effort. Just make sure not to overdo this. At one point I used a rotary tool to spin the hinge while holding sandpaper against it and the hinge melted and warped from the heat, so be gentle. The parts should however swivel freely around the hinge or else they might break it.

Time it took was approximately around 10 hours but of course it will depend on your printer model. The Snapmaker2 is notoriously slow because it can also be used for CNC and Laser cutting, so it is a compromise machine rather than one geared up for fast 3d printing and nothing else. If you print this on a Prusa Mk3S+ I estimate it might take around 5-6 hours.

How I Designed This

This was designed in Fusion 360 and exported as an STL. All the STLs are included in the download section.

Category: Mobile Phone
