Model 1888 bayonet-knives, along with rifles of the Lee-Metford and Lee-Enfield systems, were in service with the British army from 1889 until the beginning of the 20th century. Rifles of the Lee-Metford and Lee-Enfield systems could be used with various bayonets. The first such bayonet-knife - Mk. I type 1 - was put into service on June 20, 1889 and produced in the amount of 25,000 pieces. He had a straight, double-edged, hexagonal blade and a handle consisting of two wooden cheeks. The cheeks were fastened with three rivets, and their unfortunate location often led to the splitting of the handle.
