The modular porch rail planting system lets you artistically and safely add garden space to your existing deck or porch railings. The system consists of “platforms” that fit onto the railing, and the platforms expose a stylized French Cleat for hanging accessories. Includes models for the accessories.

The resulting deck railing garden gives you a great way to safely arrange multiple styles of pots and plants and bird accessories. Birds love small garden spaces and will visit your garden to eat insects and to get a drink and a bath.

Three styles of top rail platform:

Platform that exposes two cleats (one on each side of the rail) with channels for use with irrigation systems - the irrigation tubes are hidden from view by the platforms. Use T fittings in the water tubes to rise up between the planting platform rail tops.

Platform with two cleats but no tubes (prints faster)

Platform that is one sided to hang accessories on only one side of the railing (typically the inward side). This platform includes clips that hold the platform to the railing and prevent the weight of pots from tipping the platform off of the rail. The clips are not needed for the two sided hanger platforms.

Accessories (these will expand as I design and print more).

Bird Bath - this small square bath is to hold water for your visiting small bird friends.

Cress tray - the cress tray fits in the bird bath and allows you to sprout and easily grow cress in your deck rail-top garden.

Four and a half inch pot hanger - these hangers will hold any 4.5 inch profile pot securely - including standard terracotta pots. If you do hang heavier terracotta pots on one side of a platform, be sure to balance that pot weight out by either using the one sided platform with clips or a two sided platform hanging the same pot on both sides.

Small planter hanger. Another entry in the garden contest was a lovely little vase print rounded pot. I built a hanger for those pots - you can see some in the pictures.

More to come - feel free to message me with ideas.

Four and a half inch pot model intended to be Vase Mode printed. These pots hold as much dirt as a standard 5.5 inch pot in a 4.5 inch form factor. I call it a Tardis pot.

Each platform is intended to have a heavier/larger pot on top of the platform. The shape of the support platform provides support to keep your pots from blowing off the railing.

All of the models except the bird bath print without support. The platforms should be plated standing vertically on edge, and require a brim to print to completion. The bird bath box requires support to print cleanly.

Recommended to print all of them in PETG or other outdoor/sunlight tolerable material. Be playful with the colors and enjoy your new porch rail garden system!
