***Update:*** having to keep track of a silly little part is pretty bothersome, and instead of using the front panel controls, what about just selecting a GCode file and moving the printer to the right spot? With that in mind I added "SHIPPING.gcode" which will move the head to the right location, turn heaters off, and the fan up to high. Keep this on the sdcard, and whenever you need to put the printer back in the shipping box to bring it somewhere, just print the "SHIPPING.gcode" and you'll be in the right spot. This is a ridiculously simple little thing that makes my life easier. My Monoprice Select Mini printer is great, and it's just small enough to be "portable". I find the easiest way to transport it is in the original box with the foam inserts. Only thing is - it's designed for a very specific Z height, too high or too low and it won't fit right in the foam insert. What to do? Originally I just winged it, but that doesn't work well. Then I took measurements with my calipers and checked against that... but finally I got lazy and printed this really simple little thing. The key dimension is 24mm - the gap between the print bed and the Z arm, *not* the print head. You could print out this thing at 24mm - or absolutely anything else that you wanted - just scale it to 24mm. When you're ready to shut down and pack up your printer, put the thing on the print bed and manually lower the Z arm until it's just clear of the part, and boom, you're ready to go. You can shut down the printer and put it in the shipping box with no problems. It really is simple to the point of being pointless, but hopefully at least someone finds it helpful. I could post the SketchUp source file, but seriously - it's a 24mm long cylinder 10mm in diameter. That's it.
